The professional learning team at the News Literacy Project is seeking a part-time marketing intern to support outreach and promotional efforts for educator and general public-facing events. Our team provides virtual (and eventually in-person) sessions that emphasize teaching educators essential news literacy concepts they can integrate into the curriculum to provide their students with the abilities, knowledge and confidence to navigate an increasingly complex and ever-changing information landscape.

About NLP. Founded in 2008, NLP is a national nonpartisan education nonprofit that empowers educators to teach middle and high school students how to sort fact from fiction in the digital age. Our central offering is the Checkology® virtual classroom, an online e- learning hub. Since the platform was introduced in 2016, over 35,000 teachers have registered to use it in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, four U.S. territories and 118 other countries.

What you will do: Our primary need is to promote our professional learning programs to educators who have not previously worked with NLP and introduce them to news literacy education. Your work will focus especially on promoting NewsLitCamp®, our day-long professional learning events with school districts and news organizations. This includes email marketing and paid social media. Your role will be to support our current efforts and to add your knowledge to help us improve our outreach and increase attendance. Additionally, you will support efforts to survey educators following our events and encourage additional engagement with NLP. This position is ideal for students pursuing a degree or professionals beginning a career in marketing and will provide a range of nonprofit experience.

What you bring: We hope to find a motivated person who is pursuing a career in marketing, communications, or a related field, especially for nonprofit or educational organizations. You have effective written and verbal communication and collaboration skills and are knowledgeable about current best practices for promoting events. You are very comfortable developing copy for email, social, and other promotional methods. You have in-depth knowledge of social media channels and other digital platforms for event and content promotion. You have a keen eye for detail and are open to new and emerging promotional strategies, while remaining well-versed in existing promotional methods. We’re looking for someone who will hit the ground running, has a collegial nature, and can work both independently and collaboratively with exceptional time management and organizational skills.

This position will report to the manager of professional learning. It involves a maximum of 15 hours per week and pays $15 per hour. This is a non-exempt position and is not eligible for benefits. This position is virtual; the successful candidate can live anywhere in the United States. Work hours for this position will be determined by your location.
