NewsLit Nation Insider: No lazy days of summer at NLP!

I hope your summer is off to a great start! We are bustling and growing here at NLP, and as part of that growth, please welcome my awesome colleague, Miriam Romais. She is joining the network team as senior manager of educator engagement.
You may know Miriam from NLP’s NewsLitCamp® or other professional learning events in her previous role with the education team. Among her new responsibilities, Miriam will become the voice of NewsLit Nation Insider, beginning with the August issue.

Get to know her through this Q&A or listen to the episode of the podcast Education for Sustainable Democracy that features Miriam and John Silva, NLP’s senior director of education and training. I’m excited to learn all that Miriam is cooking up for our educators!

In the meantime, your commitment to news literacy education is not going unnoticed. Here are some new resources and programming to keep your news literacy fires burning.

We’re excited to announce the debut of a new Check Center tutorial on the Checkology® virtual classroom, “Advanced Skill: Lateral Reading.” Located under the skills menu, this short video featuring Hannah Covington, NLP’s senior manager of education and content, will help students improve their internet detective work. Check it out! Not ready for the advanced version? We’ve got basic skills covered, too.

In summer school? So are we, so to speak! We have created two summer school courses on Checkology, one for middle school and one for high school. Need support? Chat with us at the Help Center or via NewsLit Nation’s forum. And be sure to check out this new resource, “Tips for blended learning with Checkology.”

What's New
Passionate about news literacy? We’ll soon be announcing a call for applications to be part of the 2022 cohort of our News Literacy Ambassador Program! NLP is seeking educators in key cities to join us in building a local footprint for regional organizing efforts in the fight against misinformation. Learn more about current ambassadors and stay tuned for the deadline to apply, coming in August.
Wondering about this year’s “Best Digital Tools for Teaching and Learning?” NLP and Checkology are thrilled to be included among the American Association of School Librarians’ 2021 list of honorees.
NLP celebrates news literacy change-makers. In June, NLP honored its 2021 educator, journalist and students of the year in recognition of their outstanding achievements during an unprecedented and challenging school year. Watch the virtual awards celebration and learn about the honorees here. Next year, maybe you or one of your students will be honored!
