Working with us
When you work at the News Literacy Project, you will collaborate with a group of remarkably dedicated people on one of the most pressing issues of our time. We embrace diverse viewpoints and unique life experiences as a way to strengthen our work’s quality and impact.
We are a virtual workplace with staff members located across the country. Our team works remotely with access to a Washington, D.C., office for in-person collaboration. We foster a supportive, inclusive culture where people feel that the work they do matters. Diversity strengthens our mission, and we’re committed to our organizational values, with an emphasis on independence and nonpartisanship.
Important notice for job seekers
Thanks for your interest, we’re happy you’re here! Some tips: Please apply directly through our website or recognized job portals. NLP does not engage the services of external recruiters unless it is stated in the job posting. All hiring is done directly through our official channels. Be cautious if you are solicited for a position by someone who claims to be from NLP, and verify such solicitations by sending an inquiry to info@newslit.org.
Feel free to share a posting with someone who might be a good fit. You can also send us your resume for general consideration — we’ll keep it on file for six months.

More about our benefits
Salaries: NLP offers competitive salaries based on position and experience.
Raises & bonuses: Every team member is eligible for annual performance-based raises and a potential annual bonus of up to 10% for exceptional performance.
401(k) plan: After 90 days of employment, each team member is eligible to participate in our 401(k) plan, which offers a match up to 4%.
Health insurance & health savings account (HSA): Team members have a choice of health insurance plans for themselves and their families, including medical, drug, dental and vision coverage. NLP pays 80% of the premium.
In addition, NLP annually funds personal HSAs — currently at $1,600 for individuals and $3,200 for families — and provides flexible savings accounts on request and based on eligibility.

Professional growth & personal well-being
Professional development: Every team member has access to a professional development allowance of $1,000 per year for pre-approved, job-related learning.
Personal well-being: We support each staff member’s health and well-being with an annual allowance of $750 to spend on approved wellness items and services. This stipend may be allocated in whole at one time or in part over the fiscal year.
Flexible virtual work environment: NLP offers a flexible virtual working environment for all team members and provides a monthly stipend of $210 to cover work-from-home costs.
Leave policies: Unlimited paid time off (PTO): We offer unlimited leave to all salaried employees. There is no preset amount of PTO that employees can take, and eligible employees do not accrue PTO. This benefit is an extension of our commitment to providing work flexibility to employees and is not additional compensation for work performed. PTO-eligible employees can decide when and how much time to take off — subject to their responsibilities to the organization and with manager approval.
Sick leave: Sick leave is not accrued and has no preset limit; it is not additional compensation but a reflection of our commitment to employee flexibility. It should be used to care for oneself or family members.
Paid holidays: NLP offers a total of 17 paid holidays annually, including 11 federal holidays and six additional days.
In addition, NLP offers eligible team members the following options:
- Comp days for required weekend work or travel.
- Bereavement leave.
- A generous parental leave policy.
