Checkology parent and guardian letter

Educator resources

The Checkology parent and guardian letter provides wording educators can adapt to share information about using Checkology® in the classroom. It goes over why news literacy will be an important focus and highlights the nonpartisan national education nonprofit status of the News Literacy Project. It also shares the five primary standards NLP uses to define news literacy education:

1. Information type: Distinguishing between advertising, news, opinion and entertainment.
2. Free press: Exploring the importance of the First Amendment and a free press.
3. Credibility: Understanding why ethical standards are essential to quality journalism.
4. Verification, analysis and evaluation: Developing increased critical habits of mind.
5. Citizenship: Seeking, sharing and producing credible information.

It ends with a call to action for families who wish to subscribe to the News Literacy Project’s newsletter for families, Scroll Smarter.
