Democracy’s Watchdog: Migrant Child Labor
The press has historically, though sometimes imperfectly, served as a check on government and corporate power in the United States. This Checkology activity invites students to research an important example of investigative journalism and reflect on the watchdog role of the press. In this case study, students examine how migrant children worked dangerous, deadly jobs across the U.S. in recent years. Students reflect on how this investigation connects with their own lives. As an optional extension, they can create a resource sharing their findings with peers.
Students can complete this activity on its own or as a follow-up to the “Democracy’s Watchdog” lesson.
Learning objective
