News Literacy Project awarded $1.2 million grant from Carnegie Corporation of New York
WASHINGTON, D.C., Dec. 22, 2025 — Carnegie Corporation of New York has approved a $1.2 million grant to the News Literacy Project, which will help advance the nonpartisan nonprofit’s ambitious strategic plan.
The News Literacy Project develops effective teaching models that schools can share and use at scale and works to ensure students learn essential news literacy skills before they graduate from high school.
“In today’s fast-moving and confusing information environment, news literacy is as essential for students as English and math,” said Charles Salter, president and CEO of the News Literacy Project. “We are grateful for Carnegie Corporation of New York’s support, which helps us bring proven resources and teaching models to more schools so students can recognize credible information and make informed decisions.”
Carnegie previously invested in the News Literacy Project’s District Fellowship program, which provides funding and expert guidance to help school districts launch news and media literacy instruction to meet their local needs. Districts from coast to coast — including Los Angeles Unified School District; Canyons, Utah; Round Rock, Texas; and Brookline, Massachusetts — participate in the program.
“In a fragmented information environment, news literacy is essential to students’ educational development and civic participation,” said Ambika Kapur, a program director for education at Carnegie Corporation of New York. “The News Literacy Project has shown how this work can be scaled in partnership with school systems and grounded in local needs. We’re pleased to support their efforts to help more students graduate with the skills to navigate information responsibly.”
Carnegie Corporation of New York was established by Andrew Carnegie in 1911 to promote the advancement and diffusion of knowledge and understanding. Today the foundation works to reduce political polarization through philanthropic support for the issues that Carnegie considered most important: education, democracy, and peace.
