The News Literacy Project (NLP) is a national nonprofit education organization that creates classroom resources for teachers across the country. We believe that learning how to understand and evaluate news and media is important so that young people can be well-informed, think for themselves and participate in society.
News literacy education is important for everyone, no matter their political views. News literacy as a discipline – much like math or English – is nonpartisan. Impartiality and fairness are among our core values, and this is reflected throughout our educational resources, our communications and our funding. Because of this, educators, school leaders and experts in media literacy with a variety of perspectives use our resources.
Our materials address current events without partisan or political favor. We help students learn to critically evaluate the news and information they encounter every day – teaching them how to think about important events and issues, not what to think. We maintain full independence over the creation of our resources. We raise funds for the projects and resources we explore, and whenever possible, we seek to secure unrestricted financial support – funds that can be applied to meet our annual budget target and not for a specific project.
