Geraldine Baum is chief communications officer at PEN America, a literary and free expression advocacy organization. Prior to this appointment in July 2022, she was assistant dean of external affairs at CUNY’s Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism. She previously worked for six years as senior vice president for communications and marketing at the Local Initiatives Support Corporation, a nonprofit that focuses on community transformation. Earlier, Geraldine spent more than two decades as a reporter at the Los Angeles Times, where she served as bureau chief in New York City and Paris and also reported from Washington. She began her journalism career at The Miami Herald and spent seven years at Newsday, where she was part of a team that won the Pulitzer Prize for General Local or Spot News Reporting in 1984. Before joining the NLP board, Geraldine was a member and the chair of NLP’s New York City Advisory Committee.
