Stumping a savvy audience with 2 Truths and AI

In February the News Literacy Project participated in the invitation-only Knight Media Forum 2026, where our Senior Manager of Education Design Dan Evon challenged an audience of journalism, civic and academic leaders to tell whether content they were shown was AI generated or real.
Using the format of our 2 Truths and AI series on TikTok and Instagram, Evon led attendees through an interactive quiz that surprised and stumped many in the audience.
“When I presented 2 Truths and AI to a room full of journalists and other education and media-savvy people at the Knight Media Forum, I was nervous that the game would be a bit too easy and that they’d get all the answers correct. That’s not what happened,” said Evon, who also writes our RumorGuard® posts, which use trending examples of misinformation to teach the news literacy skills needed to determine whether information and sources are credible.
When it comes to AI, that is becoming ever more difficult.
A ‘perfect’ score
The audience at the Knight Media Forum found that out when they notched a “perfect” score on the quiz: They got every answer wrong!
“I think the presentation showed that trying to spot AI-generated content with the naked eye is basically a guessing game, even for seasoned reporters. It’s necessary to look at the source, evidence and surrounding context to identify these fabrications,” Evon said.
The game clearly demonstrated that anyone can be fooled by AI. When we go online to scroll social media or search out the news, we should ask ourselves, “How can I tell if something is AI generated?” News literacy skills can teach you how.
