News Literacy Project wins grant from OpenAI’s People-First AI Fund
WASHINGTON, D.C., Dec. 3, 2025 – The News Literacy Project won a $500,000 unrestricted grant from OpenAI Foundation’s People-First AI Fund, the tech giant announced on Wednesday. The nonpartisan nonprofit was selected from more than 3,000 applications to an open call for grants.
The investment helps the News Literacy Project continue to provide timely, free classroom resources to educators in all 50 states, giving students the skills to navigate an information landscape that is rapidly evolving with advances in AI.
“AI-generated content is everywhere but AI literacy is not,” said Charles Salter, President and CEO of the News Literacy Project. “Technology moves at lightning speed, and with this grant we can help kids keep pace by teaching them valuable skills to identify the unfounded claims, conspiracy theories and AI-slop that flood the platforms where they spend so much of their time.”
The News Literacy Project, a nonpartisan nonprofit, is meeting growing demand from educators for free resources to help them teach students AI literacy. Short-form videos and quizzes translate fast-moving AI developments into classroom-ready insights, such ashighlighting misinformation in Google’s AI Overviews, exposing the pitfalls of AI-generated images and helping students “spot the AI.” NLP’s Teaching About AI webpage features easy-to-use lesson plans, infographics, activities and training videos. Resources include the “6 Things to Know About AI” infographic and “Introduction to Algorithms,” a lesson on the award-winning digital learning platform Checkology®.
The grant from OpenAI People-First Fund’s inaugural round of funding is part of a $50 million commitment to support 208 nonprofits and mission-focused organizations working at the intersection of innovation and public good. The funds will support the News Literacy Project’s general operating budget.
