The News Literacy Project and Samuel Hubbard Shoe Company stand for the First Amendment

‘Freedom Shoe’ promotes the First Amendment and advances news literacy in schools

Washington, D.C.,  and San Francisco Sept. 18, 2018— The News Literacy Project and Samuel Hubbard Shoe Company are teaming up to shine a light on the important freedoms protected under the First Amendment, most especially freedom of the press. Samuel Hubbard is rolling out its new “Freedom Shoe” line, which features the First Amendment engraved on the sole of each shoe; for every online purchase, the company will donate $20 to the News Literacy Project.

“At the News Literacy Project, we know the critical role that a free press plays as democracy’s watchdog, holding the powerful in government and the private sector accountable. That’s why a key goal of our programs is for students to understand and appreciate the First Amendment,” says Alan C. Miller, founder and CEO of the News Literacy Project. “We see the partnership with Samuel Hubbard as a perfect fit. Not only are the words of the First Amendment engraved on every sole, but also the proceeds from the sales will help expand our efforts to teach students what information to believe, share and act on.”

The Freedom shoe is the brainchild of Bruce R. Katz, founder and CEO of the Samuel Hubbard Shoe Company. “We named our first shoe the Hubbard Free because we believe that every journey should begin with feeling comfortable, feeling free,” says Katz. “I believe that our First Amendment is a simple and elegant statement of where our freedom begins – and it’s essential that in today’s charged environment we remember what it stands for.”

The Hubbard Freedom Shoe line comprises three styles of women’s shoes in a variety of colors. The special promotion with the News Literacy Project will last through March, or until online sales generate $100,000 for the organization. The funds will underwrite The Sift, NLP’s weekly newsletter highlighting teachable moments in news literacy, for the entire 2018-19 school year.
